Illustrating Curious George was an extraordinary experience that Craig Witte will cherish forever. He had the privilege of illustrating five books in the series, each one a labor of love meticulously crafted by hand without the use of digital tools.

Every page was painted at double the original size to ensure precision and detail, using watercolor as the medium of choice for its delicate transparency and fluidity. Each brushstroke was intentional, every color thoughtfully mixed to bring the world of Curious George to life. The larger format allowed Witte to focus on the finer details, rendering each character and scene with charm and accuracy.

This hands-on approach turned every page into a miniature work of art, offering a tactile and immersive creative process. The texture of the paper, the subtle shifts in pigment, and the physicality of the materials added a deeply personal connection to the work.

Illustrating such a beloved character came with its own set of challenges and joys. Witte embraced the responsibility of honoring the legacy of Curious George, capturing the character’s whimsical spirit and curious nature that readers adore. Within those boundaries, he found space for personal expression, infusing each illustration with his own artistic voice.

Reflecting on the experience, Witte recognizes how much he grew as an artist through these projects. It wasn’t just about creating illustrations, it was about storytelling, evoking emotion, and bringing joy to readers of all ages.

The books Craig Witte illustrated are:

  • Curious George Feeds the Animals
  • Curious George and the Hot Air Balloon
  • Curious George's Dream
  • Curious George Makes Pancakes
  • Curious George Pop-Up Storybook House
