Having a background in print design is quite common among UX designers who grew up in an era before computers, smartphones, and tablets became ubiquitous. This foundation in traditional design techniques has a profound influence on their approach to digital design. For me, venturing into print design is a refreshing and invigorating experience, offering a unique sandbox for exploring new ideas and pushing creative boundaries. Print design encourages stepping out of one’s comfort zone and taking risks. This willingness to experiment and innovate is crucial for any designer's growth and evolution. C. Design is a personal endeavor that I pursue alongside my main projects, sometimes for my own satisfaction and other times for freelance clients. This work allows me to continually hone my skills and explore the vast possibilities that print design offers. One of the most rewarding aspects of designing for print is the in-depth understanding it provides of fundamental design principles. Typography, for instance, takes on a new dimension in print, where the choice of typeface, kerning, and leading can dramatically affect readability and aesthetics. The tactile nature of print also forces designers to consider the limits of CMYK printing, teaching valuable lessons about color theory and reproduction. My favorite nuance in print design is mastering the use of black versus rich black—a subtle yet impactful distinction that can elevate the overall look and feel of a printed piece.
