There comes a pivotal moment in every artist's journey, after countless hours spent grappling with the fundamentals of painting, when everything just clicks. This "a-ha" moment is transformative. Suddenly, the focus shifts from the mechanics of how to paint to the more profound and liberating aspect of using paint as a medium for expression. It's no longer about the technicalities but about the creative freedom and emotional depth that painting can offer. This epiphany is akin to learning a new language. At first, you struggle with basic vocabulary, piecing together a few words here and there. Gradually, you advance to forming simple sentences, slowly building up your fluency. Then one day, without even realizing it, you find yourself conversing effortlessly, expressing complex thoughts and emotions with ease. Similarly, in painting, you move from tentative brushstrokes to confidently conveying your vision on the canvas. The journey to this point is filled with challenges and frustrations, but it's these very struggles that lay the foundation for your growth as an artist. Each mistake, every experiment, adds to your understanding, bringing you closer to that moment of clarity. When it happens, painting becomes an extension of your soul, a language through which you communicate your inner world to others. This breakthrough doesn't mark the end of learning; rather, it's the beginning of a more profound exploration of artistic expression. With this newfound perspective, every brushstroke carries more intention, and every color choice resonates with your unique voice. It's a beautiful realization that painting is not just about creating something visually appealing, but about telling a story, evoking emotions, and sharing a part of yourself with the world.

Published in 1977, these two books sparked my passion for art. My dad and I would spend countless hours drawing from them, never realizing that this would be the beginning of my journey towards a career in art.
