The product design process (a visual story).
Let’s explore the fascinating world of product design through a visual step-by-step guide. This is of an actual product for Nielsen. Keep in mind that this is my approach, and there are various methods out there. However, I believe this guide captures the most common practices.
Research
Begin by conducting thorough research. Identify gaps and opportunities
Personas
Understand your target market, user needs, and business objectives.
Engage in brainstorming sessions
Explore different concepts, sketch out ideas, and visualize potential solutions.
Ideation
This phase is all about generating possibilities.
Bring your ideas to life
Create detailed designs, considering form, function, and appearance.
UX
Think about user experience (UX) and how the product will fit into people’s lives.
Testing and iteration
Prototype your design and test it rigorously. Gather feedback, identify areas for improvement, and iterate.
Create a design handoff document
Compile all necessary details and digital assets. Include design specs, user flows, interaction details, animations, copy, responsive breakpoints, accessibility considerations, and data validations.
Share the handoff document
Provide developers with a clear link or document containing all relevant information with annotations.
Get ready to launch
Address any issues promptly to refine the design and avoid surprises after handoff.
